The exhibition SEMANGAT: Selected Works from the Maybank Art Collection, Volume 1 is specially put together in conjunction with Maybank’s 60th anniversary. Maybank is a proponent of integrating art in the workplace, which is part of the larger trend toward humanising the work environment. It set up an art gallery named Balai Seni Maybank in 1989 as a platform for local artists to showcase their talent and supports their careers by purchasing their works. Many of these works are displayed in its offices in 12 countries and major financial centres of the world such as Singapore, Shanghai, London and New York.
SEMANGAT features 17 works by Malaysia’s prominent artists selected from the Maybank Art Collection and brought together for the first time to be shown to the public online. They include modern sculptures by Abdul Latiff Mohidin (b. 1941) and Yusof Ghani (b. 1950) and paintings by Datuk Syed Ahmad Jamal (1929-2011), Datuk Ibrahim Hussein (1936-2009), Khalil Ibrahim (1934-2018), Datuk Tajuddin Ismail (b. 1949), Ismail Abdul Latiff (b. 1955) and Mohamed Din Mohamed (1955-2007).
The Malay word ‘semangat’ may be translated as ‘spirit’ in English, but it is in fact pregnant with multiple shades of meaning — soul, essence, zeal, desire, passion, excitement, intensity — depending on the situation that gives rise to it. It is also a term that refers to the supernatural forces that are believed to inhabit the Malay world. This selection of works embodies semangat in all its nuances. The last offering of this remarkable year 2020 from Balai Seni, may it lift our spirits in these unprecedented times.
